Interested in digging deeper and even
getting your hands dirty? The Workshop will be a "hands-on" and a "minds-on" PLAYGROUND to explore ideas discovered in the galleries and library. At the end, I hope that you will share your creations to our "Create" gallery so you can help build an even more dynamic archive of ideas. The Workshop can either be led with a facilitator and group, or self-paced and stretched over a longer period to give you a chance to digest the material. Choose your own adventure! |
Brainstorm Activity:
Close your eyes and think of a situation(s) when you were filled with inspiration and joy to create something (or learn something new.) NEXT: Create a visual or physical model that symbolizes it (using whatever you have laying around the house) or use some other creative method, like using a photo editing app, or perhaps assemble your ideas in a short poem or song. There are no rules here. You can be elaborate and detailed OR you can collapse ideas into symbols and metaphor. And don't worry about perfection. Have fun and a even a sense of humor. (No grades are given!) |
REFLECT:
How often do you tap into play to inspire your creativity? Any thoughts on why we simply do not experience playful learning in such joyful and creative ways? |
Explore More! Do an Internet search on a topic you found interesting from the Showcase and see if you can find an example of a similar maker space or community within library, museum, business, school or other community non-profit in your local community or other location around the world.
SHARE What you found with me at joyed at hotmail.com and I will add it to the Playful Learning Archive. |

Questioning the Myth of Ideation: Tatiana Chemi and the Hard Work of Creativity
Excerpt: Dr. Chemi believes that a lack of deep understanding of creativity and creative processes has led to a somewhat instrumental approach and shallow support of creativity in schools. She spoke about the phenomenon of creativity rooms or makerspaces: I feel so sad because you can’t lock creativity in a room. It should be in the whole school. It should be in everyday life. And you can’t just teach creativity from 8-9. It’s throughout the whole school day. But sometimes based on shallow ideas or assumptions of creativity, you see these creative rooms – where we have colors, we have pillows...and it’s a misunderstanding about creativity." This article came from the Deep Play Research Group's extensive interview library with creativity researchers. CHALLENGE!
Why not try to come up with your own definition of creativity! In your opinion and experience what are the key ingredients for creativity and likewise, what interrupts the creative mindset? For a real challenge... Want to create a model of what creativity means? I dare ya! |

Make a Souvenir:
I want you to make something that will be a symbolic souvenir of your afternoon of play or any aspect of this mini-course.. Just like the very first activity, you can use random objects around the house and create a model, or you can use digital tools like a photo or video editing app, Or perhaps it will be a poem, song, or some other act of creation that will help you remember. |
SHARE
Inspire others by sharing your souvenir. Send to me at joyed at hotmail.com and I will add it to the Create Gallery. |
